I'm the intern who made the Reaver finisher and knife VFX

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:33 AM PST

    Hi there!
My name is Nicolas. I had the opportunity to join the VALORANT team this summer as a VFX Artist intern. I worked on the Reaver collection, the team let me design and create the finisher and knife VFXs from scratch! Hope you enjoy the skin so far, I had a blast working on it, and tried to make it look as epic as possible :D

I'll be joining the team again next summer for another internship, to craft more exciting VFXs!
In the meantime you can follow me on twitter to see more of my work :)

Did anyone notice Skye’s requesting a guy voice line? It’s so awesome.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 06:46 AM PST

At first she says "Help a girl out, would you?" kindly. But when she requests a gun a second time she says it all passive-aggressively. "Help a girl out, would you?" I think this is such a nice touch and I can't help but buy her every time I hear this.

I smurfed in Iron to research on Smurfs. This is what I found.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 08:07 AM PST

I see a lot of posts every day saying that low elo is very bad and there are a lot of smurfs in low ranks. So i created a new account and placed it in Iron 3 to see how many smurfs i get each game. The results were actually mind-blowing.

Note : I'm Diamond 3 on my main. So im pretty sure i can point out who is smurfing

Note 2 : I didn't want to ruin the game for players in Iron. So I only supported my team with agent's abilities. I didn't frag at all.

Here is the data I collected :

Total Ranked games played in Iron 3: 4

Game 1: Caught 2 smurfs on the enemy team with around 30+ kills. these guys were owning my team one tapping heads.

My team also had a smurf with 30 kills. a/c to my analysis these smurfs belong to Gold/Plat.

their rank in-game was bronze 1

Game 2 : Enemy team had 2 smurfs. with one of them having 37 kills. the other one went afk after 1st half. . They even admitted that they were smurfs and belong to Gold 3.

My team had 1 smurf. a/c my analysis he is Gold too. he had 32 frags.

Game 3: Surprisingly there were no smurfs on the enemy team. their kills were below 10. They surrendered.

My team had 2 smurfs. after analyzing their gameplay I concluded that they belong to Diamond-Plat. They were also talking about how they deranked on their main from Diamond.

Game 4: No smurfs on the enemy team. they had below 20 kills

Noone was smurfing on my team.

CONCLUSION: at least 3 out of 4 games In iron/Bronz have people smurfing. Mostly who belong to Gold.

THE data I collected may not be fully accurate. But I have to admit that there are a lot of smurfs in low elo.. like a wayyy lot of smurfs than I expected.

:) I'm sorry for my horrible English :)

    Unpopular Opinion on IceBox(Trigger Warning)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 07:06 AM PST

1.5k hour csgo and 2k competitive cod player here to complain about maps. Ice Box is the best designed map so far. The scale is nearly perfect, rotation time is way better than all the other maps with exception to maybe bind. The bomb sites are actually complex, not as good as csgo bomb sites, but hey it's somewhere to start. In csgo retakes are actually a challenge and require actual strategy and utility knowledge to execute, in valorant only half the enemy team actually has utility if they pick comp correctly and most of that is used early game and most of the time it's gonna be a <5 hold on a bomb site so you're limited to what angles you can cancel out. The bomb sites are a square with a big box in the middle, (bind almost has it right just need to tweak uwall and elbow somehow) there are only two realistically decent angles to hold on a retake or defense, if you aren't a utility agent you're gonna get overwhelmed insanely easy or just prefired right away because it's a 50/50 on which of the two angles they clear first. Also any of the decent spots are just alamos, you're either getting 2+ kills and making your life worth it or you're just dying for nothing, there is no consistant opportunity to take a couple jiggle peak fights and switch to a new angle. They are cod bomb sites, but that works for competitive call of duty, you throw your spawn grenades to block sight lines and try to get a pick on a rusher and then you all out sprint to get favorable map control, you might be lucky and have a concussion left to retake a plant but the point of call of duty is to gunfight so the bomb sites should be simple. If valorant wants to be a tactical aim shooter they need to take more time with their maps and make a couple more ice boxes. Clearing a bomb site should be methodical and thought through, I've been an entry fragger for a long time so I don't really mind dying to an angle I'm not prioritizing as long as my team gets info or a trade, that's a hard pill to swallow in solo q but if you want to get better you have to deal with it. IB isn't poorly designed, you just have to actually think when playing on it. To remedy this in the meantime I think movement needs to be locked at round start much like csgo, and b hopping or some movement advantage needs to be in place. Timing and map knowledge will become much more important this way, every round will cease to be a utility fight at one choke point, and maybe some default strats will start to happen in ranks below diamond.

I'm quite thankful for this community

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 11:24 AM PST

I recently just put together a desktop for my younger sister but found her playing a Roblox FPS game. So I showed her Valorant in case she wanted to play a proper shooter. She's never played a proper FPS before so admittedly she was pretty terrible, but once she got in a game she was met with encouragement from her teammates despite her performing poorly. It's nice to see that people leveling smurfs aren't being so toxic to new players who are just starting the game (cough cough league of legends). So thank you, and I hope maybe she finds the game fun and improves enough to play with me.

30 days of Aim Lab results + montage

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 08:57 PM PST

TLDR: Any warmup routine is better than none. Gridshot indirectly improved my aim by making mouse movement more comfortable.

After a long break, I got back into Valorant and decided that I would start warming up with Aim Lab before I played any games. The tasks I mostly played consisted of Gridshot, spidershot, and decisionshot. However, I ended up playing mostly gridshot towards the end. (30 min warmup before I started playing games) I noticed that going for accuracy in gridshot correlated with speed which improved my score. My tip is for people to prioritize accuracy in gridshot instead of trying to be TenZ right off the bat.

Aim lab Starting rank: Emerald 4 (Gridshot: 66k) Valorant Starting rank: Plat 3

Aim lab ending rank: Diamond 4 (Gridshot: 94k) Valorant ending rank: Diamond 3(demoted from diamond 3 5 times. ranked is a struggle)

My takeaway from this: Gridshot allowed me to be a lot more comfortable with both vertical and horizontal flicks and I feel more confident in my aim as a result. I saw more improvement with having a consistent warmup routine than before where I would just hop in the range whenever I was feeling off. If you don't have a warmup routine already, I'd recommend giving aim lab a try. I'd also like to note that crosshair placement is equally important to aim. You will win more aim duels with proper crosshair placement vs trying to flick your opponents.

Bonus montage I put together of my highlights: https://youtu.be/PVvEMas_pk4

And if its possible to make something like that, do you think that would be a great thing , i personally think it would be nice. Sorry for bad english.

    Cypher and killjoy nerfs...

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

I have a couple of gripes about the latest nerfs. I don't really play killjoy so I can't say much on that part, but cypher has had a pretty big nerf that doesn't make sense to me. I'm not one to normally complain about updates and I understand that I might not be thinking about this clearly so I'm open to hear other opinions on this.

    1. If cypher places his tripwire at any point during the round and picks it back up, the tripwire does not carry over to the next round.

The problem is that cypher is expected to set up his defenses before the round starts. Usually cypher places both tripwires every single round on defense. But then the enemy team doesn't even go to his site, so he picks up his tripwires and rotates... He never used his tripwires and they weren't destroyed... But now we need to spend another $400 to buy those tripwires again... Every single round. In my opinion, this completely ruins his economy. He didn't use his tripwires and they served no purpose once they were picked up, so I don't see why we should have to buy them over and over again and just hope they get used instead of being a waste of money.

    2. Tripwires become useless after cypher dies. The wires are not only made completely visible, but they also don't even work anymore.

I hear people say that it's not fair for cypher and killjoy to have utility working for them after they die, but cypher and killjoy aren't the only ones... Sage's slow orbs and wall, all the molotovs, all the smokes, sova arrows, raze bot, and viper poison all are effective after the agent dies. Sure they are only affective for a short while after death, but they can still prevent a defuse and can even kill enemies after death. Cypher tripwires only revealed people and stunned them if they didn't break the tripwire quick enough. If we have to nerf cypher and killjoy, can't we make the utility last for a short time after death instead of instantly being useless?

I don't care if cypher or killjoy get nerfed, I just don't understand these nerfs specifically. I hope the devs reconsider these changes, or at the very least tweak them a bit.
