Just had one of the strangest moments in Valorant

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 10:35 PM PDT

Doing some unrated, first game of the day. We get a guy, doesn't do anything the whole first round. I was thinking "sigh, another AFK". We won the first round, then the guy starts playing. I asked him why he didn't play in the first round, and his response was interesting..

"I had to make sure you guys were worthy of me"

He was decent, but no where near where he thought he was. Just had to share, made me laugh. Have a nice day/night

Increase the rank window at lower ranks

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:14 PM PDT

I have played all of my competitive games with the same group of my friends but we can no longer play after our placements this season because one us is Iron 2 and I'm Bronze 3. Admittedly I do come further up in the scoreboard compared to my friends on average but I do not feel like this is impacting the quality of games as there is usually one or two players on the enemy team doing just as well as I am.

We are not particularly that good and we prefer not playing with randoms on our team so we are left with two options:

    1. Only play unrated, where the matches feel less balanced and there is less to play for
    2. Play on a "smurf" account every time one of us ranks too highly and lose out on getting further in the battle pass

It's very sad that we can no longer play the game as we enjoyed it in the last Act. Obviously at higher ranks it makes a lot of sense to decrease the ranked gap but it's just made the game worse for me and my friends down in the lower end. (Maybe this is better for the average bronze solo queue player? I do not know).

I know they have said that a system like Clash could be brought to Valorant at some point and this would be great for us but surely increasing the window at lower ranks is a good alternative for us lower ranked teams.

Anyone else miss the old player cards from beta?

I loved the artwork from the agent player cards from beta, IMO they look so much better than the agent player cards we have now. I can't be the only one right?

It is too hard to remake a game

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:51 AM PDT

I played a game tonight where a teammate disconnected during the very first round of the game. I recently found out about the remake feature from this subreddit, so I quickly moved to initiate a remake. But it didn't work. While the game recognized the DC, it did not mark him as having abandoned the game until the third round, and for whatever reason a remake only works during the second round. We lost of course, because the distinction between DC'd and abandoned is moot, and in any case we were down a player for the entire match.

Why is it so difficult to remake? As far as I can tell, the only way to remake is if someone disconnects immediately, so that the person is gone for the entire duration of the first round. This is absurd. As far as I'm concerned, if someone leaves during the first couple minutes of the game, no one should be forced to play until the end and lose MMR for it.

Moreover, Riot should make the remake feature more visible; I wouldn't have found out about it without browsing the sub. The reasonable expectation is that there be a button next to "surrender" that is grayed out unless a remake is possible — or better yet, automatically initiate a remake vote when applicable.

PSA: Remake does not impact your rank if you weren't already aware

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Just had a game where someone didn't even know about remake and they thought we were surrendering so they voted no. And even if you just want to play please realize most folks are not looking to suffer a competitive match at a disadvantage.

edit: Oh btw the leaver was a killjoy that left because we weren't on defense first for ascent I literally couldn't believe it. Some people man jesus christ.

Phoenixs flashes are too easy to dodge

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 04:35 AM PDT

I'm d3 and main jett, but Im no longer afraid of being flashed by pheonix since they added the sound cue, its just too easy to dodge. Perhaps the only thing I need to worry about is resetting my crosshair placement after turning away, which isn't that hard. I think phenoix flashes need to be more reliable.

Some constructive DM feedback from a player who's been playing it a lot since the update

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:33 AM PDT

Due to covid, I've been "working" from home. Being at the ready, but doing nothing most of the time. And because of it, I've been playing DM a lot. And I mean a lot. Like 15-20 DMs per day.

    Immortal1 rank, for reference.

First of all, all the recent changes have greatly improved DM experience and it's a very enjoyable mode now, at least for me.

Player count, reload on kill, no radar are all great changes. I'd like to see health being automatically regenerated after a kill, maybe 50 for a kill and 75 for headshot, but it's fine like this. Prevents people from just holding an angle.

The only thing I think should be adjusted are respawn spots and timer. Players who get killed should be spawned as far away from their death location as possible. Because right now there are plenty of instant refrag situations. Player A kills player B, B respawns right behind A and kills him, then A respawns close to B. Happens at least a couple of times every DM for me.

Respawn timer should be reduced to 1.5-2 seconds.

Map specific stuff is a bit more complicated.

Ascent is my favorite DM map, really has that CSGO FFA feel to it and is great for the most part. Except for that ridiculous spawn deep in attackers area. Spawn that serves no purpose except for running up to B link and being killed in the back by the next player who spawns there. Maybe they should put a barrier up in attackers spawn, so people can't access it.

https://i.imgur.com/O4S1IIR.png Area behind red lines should be cut off completely, serves no purpose and just wastes time.

Haven is also great, most fights happen in common spots, like they do in actual games, maybe they should cut off attackers spawn, but that's it.

Bind is where it gets annoying for me. Way too many spawns in the "useless" areas around attackers spawn that serve no purpose except to waste 10-15 seconds while you run up to B long, showers or market area, only to get killed in the back as you're about to get to gunfight area. Sometimes you'll spawn in that attackers spawn area tunnel 5 times and just want to leave the game because you waste more than a minute total on empty running. Then you have to run backwards or you'll get shot in the back.

I don't have anything against being shot in the back, it's a DM, it's bound to happen, but I want to respawn back in action. Instead, you often go right back to "useless" areas and waste another 10-15 seconds doing nothing.

https://i.imgur.com/dDGiRNV.png Areas between red lines being cut off would make the map way better to play in DM.

Split...is just not a DM map. Idk why are we forced to play it. I actually like the map for competitive play, unlike most people, but it's just awful for DM. Nothing will fix that. Similar to for example Overpass or Nuke that are not DM maps, nothing wrong with that. Another problem is that in most games 3+ players leave because they don't want to play DM on Split. And who can blame them? Then you either stick around and waste time with too few players or you also leave.

Too early to say about Icebox because I'm not used to it yet, but it's just too big for 14 players and there are way too many angles. Still, really useful to play because it helps you learn the angles faster. Even though time per gunfight is way worse than on other maps.

    TL;DR

DM changes Riot made were all great, to make it perfect we need some spawn adjustments on a couple of maps. Split just isn't a DM map.

Map selector would be a great thing. I get it why we can't pick maps for competitive because they don't want people to boost playing just one map, but I don't see a reason why aren't we able to DM on whichever map we want.

Idea: Built-In Competitive “Jump School” to improve game knowledge/awareness

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 08:39 AM PDT

As someone who has played this game religiously since beta I have spent time all over the different ranks and skill levels over the course of my 3 separate(and at at this point not even really "smurf") accounts and there is one jarring disparity throughout the ranks that amazes me.

This one difference would be game knowledge, or rather, the lack there of below the plat 2/3 rank (of course there are many, many exceptions, I'm speaking using generalizations here). The biggest difference being in play style and the opponents REACTION to your plays.

D2 Example: In a D2 lobby as omen you throw a smoke into site and teleport into it, you are most likely going to die every time after the opponent hears and adjusts to this move. You know this, so instead you fake the teleport and use the smoke as bait so that you can know where he will he checking for your teleport and you can try to make a play with the info you gain. Now you've tried the fake teleport a few times, let's try the real TP to catch them off guard, keep switching it up, so on and so forth.

G2 Example: In a G2 lobby with all of the same conditions above what is the difference? Well i throw that smoke and fake teleport all the same BUT nobody on the other team heard it? Your fake was worthless and they peak you long because they never had any idea you fake teleported in the first place. So now what? Well let's try a real teleport, again no reaction whatsoever I just shoot them in the back and move on.

What was the point of our 2 examples? The point of these 2 examples is that it is nearly impossible to learn and improve upon skills you will only be learning at higher levels like increased game knowledge with what is currently available. You get used to G2 lobbies just to get a taste of better play in plat only to get rolled back to Gold because you weren't ready.

What is the proposed solution? Valorant Competitive "jump school"! Think similar to the bomb plant and defuse scenarios in the range but rather with bots using common abilities and plays you will see so that players can learn to counter them. I.e how to correctly flash, avoid flashes, hear and react to a teleport....etc. It will show a short video explaining the goal, showing a few examples of professional play(great way to plug your own tournaments as well for Riot). It will give you a chance to practice in a range scenario on bots and then give you a chance to try it vs live opponents if anyone else is also playing the same jump school task.

Obviously much much easier said then done to code and implement this sort of thing but I think with enough community feedback it could be used as a tool to significantly elevate the level of play for many players.

Thanks for reading, sorry for typos and/or formatting, I'm on mobile. (Never understood this but everyone always puts it)

What do you think separates good players from great players?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 08:00 AM PDT

So I'm currently silver, it's easy to see that I need to improve aim and use abilities better. Does anyone with higher rank have videos or experience on what separates an okay immortal from an excellent radiant player? Hard for me to conceptualize.

Adjust 3 rank disparity change with upcoming changes to discourage smurfing.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 10:39 AM PDT

Since the devs are planning to implement a system to boost smurfs quicker to higher ranks to discourage smurfing, wouldn't increasing rank disparity for lower ELOs be kinda alright?

It would probably reduce the number of players deliberately throwing games to demote to fit the 3 rank disparity as well.

Just a thought, would love to hear what you guys think.

There are 2 types of "warm up"

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 11:17 PM PDT

    1. Mechanical warm up

Usually done in the range or dms. Obviously trying to warm up you muscles and activate your muscle memory. This is purely for your mechanical skills such as flicking, tracking, reaction time etc. These should be practiced outside of a real match to remove unnecessary factors feom hindering your progress. HOWEVER, practicing mechanics alone (usually) cannot carry you very far. It can only be applied if you have had a

    1. Mental Warmup

This is done during a game and cannot be simulated anywhere else. Even if you can hit 30 kills on hard in the range, if your hands are shaking, you dont realise you have bad positioning or peeking angles you shouldn't, it wont matter. These skills will nurture overtime after hundreds of games, but something as simple as peeking with the right mentality is not easy if its your first game of the day after waking up an hour ago. Your mental game is half the battle so if you can do that, it will elevate your skill to another level.

The point of this is that you must realise that "warming up" is not as simple as playing dm or unrated. You have to warm up right to unlock all of your potential in a real game.

You know when people lose their first game, they jokingly say, "Oh that was my warm up game". Yeah, they aren't wrong

    Finisher for knifes

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 01:49 PM PDT

this is a bit of a weird one i guess, but i feel like since the knifes in the skin bundles are usually the most expensive thing out of the bundle (i know, when you buy the bundle you get it for free, but let's be honest alot of people usually buy single items) i wondered, why don't they implement the finisher move you get from the other guns on the knife aswell? and i already asked some people who said that there would be too many kids trolling with knifes etc but i dont think this would apply to ranked tbh, i just wished there would me a little more for the amount of money spent imo.
