    How pros got their names

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 08:08 AM PDT

Tenz - he played COD when he was a kid, his name was ZZZZZombieZZZZZ (with 10 zs), that was changed to ten z zombie and then to Tenz (ten Z).

Asuna - when playing CSGO with his friends he came up with the theory that an anime name and picture resulted in playing better. He picked Asuna which is a character from Sword Art Online... he ended up keeping the name.

Hiko - named after a character from an anime called Rurouni Kenshin. Interestingly, Hiko has never seen this anime and only started watching anime a year ago (despite going by this name for many years in CSGO). *edited for accuracy.

Shahzam - his real name is Shahzeb. When he was in elementary school his favourite teacher drew a picture of him as a superhero called Shahzam.

Stewie2k - when he played FPS games with his friends they all had names based on Family Guy characters. His was Stewie after the baby Stewie Griffin.

Wardell - named after his favorite basketball player Wardell Stephen Curry.

A way of giving back to Valorant community?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 01:11 AM PDT

I have been playing Valorant for quite some time now and wanted to do something to help the Valorant community. So whenever I'm bored I'll hop on to twitch, find small Valorant streamers who are live, go give them a follow and interact with them ( tbh a lot of them are genuinely good and deserve more views and follows )

It may not mean much for us to give a follow but it would mean a lot to them. We all know how hard it is to work for something when we aren't getting any results. This is kinda like my way to show them some love and appreciation

Every time I followed someone, I can instantly see their face light up with joy, which in turn makes me happy. If I have more time, I'll interact with them in chat, ask questions about them or the game in general. Who knows, I could have made someone's day by just spending a few mins of my spare time

If any of you have some spare time, do try this out (:

Cynprel, VALORANT Lore Enthusiast, and David Nottingham, Creative Director Interview Notes

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 08:04 AM PDT

Yesterday night, Cynprel had an interview with David Nottingham about VALORANT's lore and many other things such as Character heights, and LGBTQ+ in the game.

I took down detailed notes during this interview, as well as rewatched the VOD a couple of times and would like to share it with everybody! Here is the Original Twitch VOD if you want to watch that as well. I also have these notes written down in a Google Docs if it's hard to read on Reddit. Also, be sure to join the VALORANT Lore Discord for more information about the game's Lore and many more things like this!

    --

Rift Radio x David Nottingham Notes

For Skye, some lines, especially Omen, reveal that she uses her powers in a limited manner, or in a manner that wouldn't be seen in the game. Within the lore, are the Agents able to do more with their abilities?

    • Thinking about the game we are playing, a tactical shooter, there are lots of constraints that are very much driven by the gameplay experience
    • There are other people in the world who are not Agents, nor future Agents, that have Radianite power
    • Thinking about the lore, it depends how well the Agents themselves have cultivated and mastered their ability
    • The possibility that not all Agents got their powers the same way. There's a core reason why the majority of the Agents that have Radiant ability got them, but it's not the only one that exists in the world
    • Each Agent may have the ability to change how their powers work and get stronger because of them
    • "All things will become clear before the year is out what the cinematics, the content, etc are related to"
    • The books in David Nottingham's video that were teasing Astra were
    • Children of Blood and Bone Novel by Tomi Adeyemi (Nigerian-American)
    • Akata Witch Novel by Nnedi Okorafor (Nigerian-American)
      • These books are an African, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy POV
    • LGBTQ+ Representation in VALORANT
    • "We have a pretty active community within Riot already."
    • "We have groups we will engage with depending on which direction a character is going in"
    • In terms of the existing roster, everyone can theory craft, ship, and match people, Agents will soon have voice lines that reveal their backgrounds ex. What they do on their free time
    • When it comes to gender, it is going to be an organic devolution that feels right for the character. There is core truths that you want to peel away as you're exploring the character
    • Agents that are non-binary and LGBTQ+ is coming VALORANT and will come in the future soon
    • All agents have their own motivations for fighting
    • Would we see a character that is playable that is not in VALORANT Protocol join the roster?
    • Not sure about playable characters not in the VALORANT roster
    • Though characters that are in the roster that have their own reasons for joining VALORANT Protocol that is not directly related to Kingdom will join the roster
    • Have you thought about conflicts that could arrive beyond the current conflict, mainly future proofing?
    • "Yes, we haven't really went into this conflict, though it will be our central conflict"
    • "We have ideas on where we want to go as well"
    • "We want to keep everything in a high level framework way so we don't box ourselves in and be able to expand"
    • Agent 08 is still unknown - Developers still have no idea what Agent 08 is or how they'll fit in the story
    • What challenges did you face in crafting a narrative that has gone through so many changes before you joined?
    • Maps are some of the most complex to provide context that support the gameplay, the storytelling, and the visuals
      • Visuals should be visually appealing and should tell a story, but should support that clarity
      • The storytelling aspect as well,
        • does the map have a story to tell
        • does it fit in the world?
    • A lot of the world and lore that will be revealed with start to contextualize the central conflict
    • The characters had most of their fundamentals already done, Voice lines weren't recorded yet. The challenge, how to make lore that makes sense that is future proof and could be easily built upon
    • How great is this threat that asks these agents to put aside their differences?
    • It threatens the security and the stability of the entire planet
    • Will Agents speak their native language more often?
    • Assuming that people are playing the game in English, there will be more voice lines having the agents speaking their native language that won't have an effect in gameplay
      • The games identity is rooted in the English language
    • The agents have some say in what they are
      • Agents' names are VALORANT issued, they have some say in the choice though.
    • Astra was learning, observing VALORANT before she decided to join the team
    • Agent heights:
    • The tallest male character in the Protocol is Breach
    • 2nd tallest male character is Brimstone
    • "You know who's surprisingly tall is Phoenix. Yeah, he's taller than I thought he was." - David Nottingham
    • Shortest Agent is Jett
    • 2nd Shortest is Killjoy, her hat adds a few inches
    • The other Agents are in between these heights
    • "I think we can put something together to share to share to the community where we can be a little more specific" - David Nottingham
    • At the end of the interview, there was a secret message that was deciphered by a VALORANT Lore Scribe, DuckTime
    • https://clips.twitch.tv/TubularTacitLegOSkomodo-cGooVSb0JOO6JrY3
      • A global event, a sudden flash consumes the globe. electrical grids and power systems, worldwide shutoff. Civilization plunged into darkness for a few tense hours before just as mysteriously, power restores, engines hum back to life. "What just happened" A mysterious research lab is operation during first light. Its experiments intended to observe a hitherto undiscovered substance in the universe and to discover its truths. F.L. is a super charged radianite event and for the first time (or is it) humankind is able to record it's unimaginable progress change. Is the world ready?

    --

Cynprel has said that there is still more they will be revealing later in the Discord and in their YouTube channel. Exciting stuff happening this year for VALORANT's Lore!

Anybody else's frame rates drop for no reason?

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 11:24 PM PDT

So typically when playing I get around 400 fps average. Today I only have been getting around 180 and it even dips down to lower 120s. It makes no sense. This is with all default settings too so everything is at high quality. I haven't changed anything in the games settings either so I don't understand why this has happened all of sudden. I tested in other games to make sure it wasn't my hardware and every other game is working fine with the exact same frame rates as always. For example I typically get 220 fps when playing cold war and when I checked today it's the same. Is there something going on with valorant?

It should not be possible to get the same map more than 2 times in a row.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 12:41 AM PDT

Recently Riot started seriously cracking down on dodgers, absolutely refusing to change their standpoint on it and is starting to punish dodgers extremely.. I can understand where they're coming from, but they aren't thinking as to WHY dodging is so prevalent atm and rather focusing on punishing it instead.

Nobody likes getting the same map over and over, in fact just earlier I got icebox 3 times in a row, I feel like this bad prevalence of getting the same map over and over burns people out which is 99% of time the reason for dodging. I also genuinely can't think of a single person I've ever met who actually liked this, what do y'all think?

I'm in a match right now where my raze has disconnected, and my jett is Afk and only moving forward(ie w-key is pressed with no other input) and every round is just 3v5 torture. We can't even forfeit round because we need 4 players to forfeit but only 3 players are active on my team. Iron elo BTW

Dropping 30 bombs does not mean you belong in a higher rank.

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:07 AM PDT

I've seen alot of post lately about how players with alot of kills hardstuck in a certain rank. I just reached plat for this act and I have been there too. What I found is that if you belong in a higher rank you will consistently outperform your opponent and getting crucial kills.

When you did really well in a match but bottom frag the next match that does not mean u belong in a higher rank. In that case is not you that did well, rather its just that opponent played very badly.

I found myself always ego peeking and looking for picks in lower ranks and in this case kills does not translate to your actual performance. Leaving a taken site and rush to ct for kills isn't a good play.

As alot of people have stated kills doesn't equal to wins however I only agrees to certain extent. Getting kills is important and it only matters if you killed the 'right' opponent, if you are lurking amd killed a flashed opponent on site is not a meaningful kill(any of ur teammate can do that) , cutting off rotation is far more valuable.

If you want to rank up please play for win and do your role, if you are smoke just play smoke and not entry, create space, cut off rotation, hold angles, etc. Just play for win and you will rank up.

I built a website where you can easily save and use your ability lineups/setups and share them with others!

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 10:58 AM PDT

Hi everyone! Over the last two months I built https://www.handbook.gg/, which enables users to easily:

    • create and save ability lineups/setups (example)
    • organize and visualize their lineups on Valorant maps: (example)
    • share lineups with the community

Why did I do this instead of grinding Ranked (rip Ep. 2 Act I Plat dreams):

I played Sova a lot this past year and really didn't like how inconveninent it was to keep track of all the arrow lineups that I personally use. The websites that exist had great content but no customizability, and either didn't have a good way of organizing the lineups or didn't have a good way of showing the lineup details. Also, there are so many cool lineups being posted to Reddit and YouTube that I just end up forgetting because I don't have the time to go into custom games to memorize them so I wanted to create a system that solves these issues.

    How it works:

To start building your collection of lineups, you will need to either create your own lineups or import lineups that other people have exported (such as the ones below that I have exported).

To create your own lineup, click the Add button after selecting the map, agent, and ability. Then, simply plot a trajectory with up to 2 bounces on the map and add the images and descriptions that will help you remember the lineup.

Lineup end points will appear on the map after you have selected the map, agent, and ability and hovering your mouse over them will show you the lineup trajectories available. Clicking the lineup end points will allow you to select the specific lineup that you want to see details for. Clicking a lineup trajectory will bring up its lineup details.

There are many ways you can import and export lineups to share with others:

    • For exporting, click the Export button and you can either copy the lineup text and paste it to websites like Pastebin or download the .json file to your device.
    • For importing, click the Import button and you can either directly copy and paste the lineup text, copy and paste the Pastebin paste key, or upload the .json file from your device.

Here are some paste keys for lineups that I have created and exported to Pastebin using Handbook that you can import and begin using immediately (can't post Pastebin links as they are auto removed by the subreddit):

    • Bind:
      • WDBpzY02: Sova (Recon bolts, post plant Shock bolts) based on this video by AverageJonas and arrows I personally use
      • p6z2PYEX: Brimstone (post plant Incendiaries)
    • Ascent:
    • Split:

Lineups are saved and cached for future visits as you add, delete, and import them, but will be erased if your cookies are cleared so make sure to back up your lineups often by exporting them.

All of the above information and video examples can also be found in the How To section of the website.

It is my hope that this website saves you guys a lot of time and effort and I will be doing my best to keep it updated with the latest maps, agents, and abilities and fix any issues that arise. However, this is a project that I'm doing in my spare time and it is a one-man show so please understand if things take a bit longer than expected.

It would mean the world to me if you guys checked it out and I hope to see some paste keys alongside future lineup posts and videos!

tldr: I wanted to be lazy and not memorize lineups and proceeded to spend 2 months building a website

    Casual Clutch Tutorial

    Posted: 19 Mar 2021 02:13 AM PDT

    Casual Clutch Tutorial

    Hello everyone :-)

Today I would like to elaborate a bit about one of the most exciting parts of the game. It starts with a commentator saying: "Last player standing".

    https://preview.redd.it/hs8p4ttxdyn61.png?width=322&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ab00a84548803428687458ab3acf84488abb86c

    1. Better to prevent than to cure

First rule of clutching is "You do not allow the clutch phase to happen". Second rule of clutching is "You do not allow the clutch phase to happen". However bluntly stated, it covers the truth. Most of the time, even if low on health and with no utility – two players have still better chances to claim the round than full hp, full utility clutcher. Clutches are fun to watch, but they are also really stressful for both "last player standing" and rest of his team. And too much stress may result in significant underperformance for many players. You need to care about your team's survival.

    2. To clutch or not to clutch, that is a question

It happened. Your whole team has been eradicated. After you gathered all necessary information it is time to make a choice – is it worth the risk to battle remaining enemies. There are actually just two cases when you can restrain yourself from direct attempt to clutch: when the odds are really hopeless, like it is not even theoretically possible for you to successfully defuse a spike before it explodes. Second one concerns a difficult situation when you have a decent weapon (Vandal, Phantom, Odin, Operator) and your team's economy is really poor. When you decide that it would be better not to risk this time, your main task is to take the best weapon available to the next round and safely take down as many opponents as possible to harm their economy. If you have poor weapon, it is the last game of the phase or opponent's team is one game away from winning – you must attempt to clutch. Also calculate your economy situation whether you die or not, and remember about getting one Ult Point for dying.

    3. Create a good clutch atmosphere

As I have underlined before, clutch is always stressful in some way. Therefore your whole team should create pleasant atmosphere around clutch issues that will maximize last player's chances to carry out that situation. First of all, providing clutcher with information may be helpful but it definitely should not be overused. Most of the information should flow at the beginning of clutch phase or between battles if absolutely necessary. You have to leave much space for a player to simply focus and make a plan of his own. Most players don't like blabbering during clutch. Remember to praise your teammate if he manages to clutch successfully, especially in tough situation when rest of the team misplayed their actions. If he fails to do so, you can leave a simple "nice try" if his attempt was quite decent. Under any circumstances you should not flame your teammate if he didn't clutch – usually it was not his fault and you should remember that whole rest of the team also didn't manage to survive this round. If you punish your teammate for not clutching he will simply rush mindlessly next round or die instantaneously after becoming the last player – just to avoid huge responsibility, pressure and expectations.

    BASIC CLUTCH STRATEGY

    1. Gather up all information

To successfully carry out a clutch you should gather as much information as possible that may be useful to last player. That involves especially enemy's potential positions, their remaining health and time left to end of the round. Another pretty useful information are position of the Spike, enemy's guns, their remaining utility. You can also casually remind a clutcher of utility that he has left in his arsenal or upgraded guns that he can pick from the ground. Nevertheless, it is usually better just to stay quiet unless you see that your clutcher obviously miss some crucial information.

    2. Typical clutch scenarios

    - Lurker: if opponents don't know your exact position yet try to conceal yourself and surprise one of the remaining opponents from unexpected angle. If you managed to kill him, try to hide again. You can also sometimes push aggressively as a last resort surprise.

    - Utility: you shouldn't hesitate to use all your utility to help you with winning the round. Before you attempt to kill remaining enemies or defuse a Spike – make up a good plan and remember of being creative and unpredictable.

    - Isolate your enemies: if you are caught by two enemies at the same time, your chances of taking them both down are rather low. Try to check corners and combat enemies one by one, watch out for double peeks from different hideouts.

    - Peek and commit wisely: value your remaining health, lower your risk as much as possible. Check corners widely, peek and commit safely to spot up enemies without necessarily instantly fighting for life. Run around obstacles, hide if possible, provoke opponents to take risky duels.

    - Play smart around a Spike:

As an Attacking Side you should plant Spike as fast as possible and as safely as possible. Remember that your only goal is to make Spike explode, so don't peek enemies unnecessarily. Default strategy in that position is taking down an enemy while he is busy defusing, so plant thoughtfully and position yourself to help you survive and kill potential defuser easily.

As a Defender you should aim for taking down a planting enemy, as he is immobilized for 4 seconds, and he must do it before time limit expires. Therefore, you should also remember that you win if enemies fail to plant a spike within default round time, so let them make a mistake, don't take unnecessary duels if it is possible to win by time expiration. Sometimes it is more surprising to peek enemy just as his managed to plant. If you find yourself in a situation that spike is already planted, take additional notice of time limit, you have roughly 45 seconds to perform two 3,5-second defuses. Don't stall too long.

    - Spike Mind Games: remember that you can tap spike to fake your plant or defuse, include these tactics to outmaneuver your enemy. Performing one successful 3,5-second defuse can really increase your chances. Sometimes it is worth to stick to a full defuse if it is possible that your opponent won't make it in time to kill you. While sticking remember that attacker has exactly 7 seconds to stop you from defusing, watch out for his rush.

That's all of my thoughts about this topic for now. Clutch is pretty individual dimension of Valorant, so I am really interested how other players think about it. Leave a comment and share your experience :-)

    Unrated is better than competitive

So hear me out fam. I was silver 2 last weak, duo queuing. Then we both got demoted to bronze. He left and and I went alone. Iron 3 same day, while getting 38 kills.

People hate comms at lower ranks and are extremely toxic.

I was fed up and decided to play unrated.

It's fun, I've learnt raze,( omen main) and had a pretty good time, everyone is so chill.

I understood one thing, rank doesn't matter, what matters is having fun. Unrated is much more fun than ranked.

Yoru should be able to fly

    Posted: 18 Mar 2021 10:23 PM PDT

He should get another ability that lets him noclip around the map. This might seem broken to many but it's the only way to make him viable. If necessary, to make this more fair, his model could become an extremely overweight Yoru at around 900 pounds, making him easier to hit.
